During the past few years, I’ve focused on planning different trips to take during all of my time off.  So much so that I can’t recall the last time I stayed home during a vacation.  Enter this year’s Memorial Day long weekend.

The Urban Dictionary defines a staycation as a vacation spent at home enjoying all that home has to offer.  It seems so obvious, right? I couldn’t have thought of a better word to describe the situation.

As an interesting side note, the term was added to the 2009 version of the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary – brilliant!

When you live in Miami, calling time off at home a staycation feels a little like cheating. I can assure you that it wouldn’t be the same type of staycation if you lived in, say, Mt. Washington, New Hampshire – reported to be among the coldest places to live in the country year-round.

Miamians are so lucky, we get to staycate in a city that most people view as a top vacation destination, which also translates into many visitors from all over the world.

This weekend I’ll be attending a high-school friend’s wedding in Key Biscayne.  We went to high school in Caracas, Venezuela, and most guests will be coming in from out of town.  I’m excited to see some friendly faces that I haven’t seen in ages.

Most of all, I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good weather…which in Miami shouldn’t be too much of a stretch!

[…] Last year turned out to be a great time to relax at the beach and catch up with old friends. This year, I’m very excited that the plan is to spend some time catching up with wedding plans and doing some honeymoon research.  Perhaps we’ll also have time for a few candle-lit dinners out on our balcony. […] It’s easy to take for granted the fact that the beach is scarcely 15 mins away.  Last Sunday we organized a beach day with friends (and their kids), and it turned out to be a really nice Miami staycation. […]
