Happy Halloween

I have mixed feelings about Halloween. On one hand, I really enjoy seeing people get creative with their costumes, though I’ve never been too creative with my own.  On the other, I’m not really sure most of us know exactly what we’re supposed to be celebrating.  Is it just about people being silly and having fun? Or are we supposed to be celebrating the dead? Because I’m not sure how I feel about that!

Yet it’s hard not to be drawn into Halloween celebrations. Last year I had a great time at a friend’s pumpkin carving party.

Any reason is a good reason to get together with friends and get in touch with your inner child again. Carving funny-looking pumpkins and eating yummy ghost-shaped food will do this to you.

Wishing everyone a spooky Halloween!

Bike love

I’ve been itching to get a bicycle all year, and the universe seems to agree that this is a good idea. I’m getting signs of it everywhere.

For the past few months, I’ve been walking past this gorgeous teal-colored bicycle every day after work. It’s always tied up to the same light post outside the parking garage.  I love the colors and style, and think it would be perfect with a little basket attached to the front!

I’m not sure I’ll find one just like this, but I do hope to fall in love with one of my own very soon.

Changing seasons

Of all the things I miss about living in Boston, I especially miss the changing seasons. My favorite was always the fall.

I miss the trees turning into many beautiful colors, and hearing the crunching sounds of walking over fallen leaves.

My First Risotto

There’s nothing more comforting than a warm bowl of creamy risotto.  It’s one of my favorite Italian dishes, and I’ve been wanting to learn how to make it for a long time.  I definitely searched for the right recipe more than once, always feeling that I would be in over my head: so many steps, so much stirring.

During my last trip to the supermarket I acted on impulse and grabbed a bag of arborio rice. It felt right, I felt determined. It was definitely a long time coming.

After going through countless recipes in search of the perfect one, I ran into this very simple step-by-step.

Encouraged by its simplicity, I followed it and chose the ingredients to make it my own.

I used Pinot Grigio, olive oil, fresh tomatoes, asparagus, and shrimp. I seasoned with fresh lime juice, sea salt, fresh ground pepper, and shaved parmesan cheese. Oh, and I didn’t use any onions.

I named it the Lemon Asparagus Shrimp Risotto. Definitely my first of many.

Afternoon at the Park

It’s been so refreshing to spend time outside now that the scalding summer weather is gone.  Last weekend, we spent the afternoon at the Key Biscayne park. This was the same day I ran into the pumpkin patch.

Fran played soccer while I  made my way around the park a few times. The day was gorgeous. I really need to get a bike!

I still remember the day I learned how to ride one. This little girl was learning that day, and it was so endearing:

I loved this one of the little girls with their bikes:

And look how pretty this flowering tree is:
