RAIN: A Tribute to The Beatles

Last Sunday night, we went to see RAIN: A Tribute to The Beatles at the Arsht Center.  If you’re a fan of The Beatles, you have to check this one out.  The show is great, the artists are amazing, and if I didn’t know better I would’ve totally bought that these guys were the real thing.

Original footage from The Beatles concerts plays on two screens as these guys perform an exact replica of the shows for you.  They mimic every single gesture, note, foot-tap, wave, etc.  The whole experience is explained really well on the Rain website: these guys have “mastered every song, gesture and nuance…delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance that’s as infectious as it is transporting.”

They’re really very impressive.

Headboard transformation

After the move, it took a while to sort through all of our stuff and figure out what we were going to keep. I had an especially hard time deciding whether to let go of an old headboard that didn’t go with any of our bedroom furniture. I decided to keep it because of its sentimental value, but it would definitely need a makeover to fit back in.

I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to take on a project, since I had really been craving for a way to get crafty around the house.  I found this great striped fabric on Etsy.com that Fran and I both liked, and then I ordered all of the other necessary materials on Amazon, my favorite one-stop shop.

Onto the step-by-step:

Step 1:  Over a flat surface, align the new fabric, batting material and foam.  Make sure you have enough batting material to fold over the edges.

Step 2:  Staple the batting material to the back of the headboard, making sure to tightly secure the foam in place.

Step 3:  Once the foam and batting material are secured in place, make sure that the fabric is straight (in our case, we used stripes so this part was especially important). Then hold the fabric tightly over the edge and staple away.

The final product:

Tip: If you ever consider trying this at home, please make sure you have someone to help you. In my opinion, this is definitely a project for two. A BIG thank you to my amazing boyfriend for his help and incredible staple-gunning technique!

Purple sparkles

I’ve always had a thing for dark and glittery nail polish, and few weeks ago I found this Royal Purple polish at Forever 21 that I just had to try.

When I started to apply it I found the polish by itself was a little too thin, so I decided to experiment. For me, applying a coat of polish over an already painted nail is always a lot easier. So to make the polish look thicker, I decided to couple it up with another purple nail polish in my collection: Sephora by OPI “On stage.” This particular polish goes on really easily, so it helps a lot to apply a coat of this one first.

After I applied a coat of the Sephora polish, I waited for it to dry. Then I painted over with a few coats of the glittery Royal Purple to add the dark & glittery color.

The result = a rich purple nail color that sparkles! I can already see myself applying these over and over…

Resolution updates

With only three months left in 2010, I wanted to do a quick self-check to see how I’ve been keeping up with my new year’s resolutions, as previously discussed here.

And here it goes:

1) This year I will stick to an exercise program: I’ve been exercising loosely here and there all year, but I didn’t commit to a program until recently. I like to blame this on the never-ending moving madness, balancing work, school work & other work, and maybe plain old laziness.  But I finally enrolled at the gym in September, and I’ve started cardio-boxing classes twice a week.

2) This year I will come up with a brilliant business idea: I know that one of these days I will wake up with one of these.. I just know it! Sigh.

3) This year I will eat better, sleep more, and save money: I’ve definitely been eating well, as seen here and here. I think I’ve been getting 7 or 8 hrs of sleep on average, but I could always use more sleep time. And finally, yes, I’ve been saving up…at least this year more than last year.

4) I will travel to at least one new place this year: Happily, I have already exceeded this resolution in 2010. I’ve visited a bunch of new places including: Cordoba in Argentina, Capetown, Pretoria, and Johannesburg in South Africa, and Culebra in Puerto Rico.  I have a few more trips on the radar for the rest of the year, but I’m still not sure if any of them will qualify as new places – we’ll have to wait and see!

Blueberry muffins

Yesterday I made a batch of blueberry muffins and came to the following realization: just like a song is able to transport me back to a particular moment, so can certain foods.

The realization came as I was waiting for the muffins to cool. My mind drifted back to Boston circa 2002, to a conversation with one of my college roomies who, to this day, loves blueberry muffins.

In my distant but vivid memory, Laura was telling me that the best blueberry muffin she had ever tried (and I know she has tried many) was at the BU Tower’s dining room.  Then my phone rang, and I was back in my kitchen.
