Starting off strong

As part of going back to my regular post-holiday routine, I spent a big chunk of the past weekend sipping on café au lait and resuming work on my professional project.

I have a new and exciting reason that’s motivating me to start the year off strong and get through the last school semester extra quickly.

Fran proposed a few weeks ago and I can’t wait to have more free time to concentrate on wedding planning!

Toad in a Hole

{via Grapevine Twine}

I ran into this dish on one of my favorite blogs, and given the speed at which my mouth watered, decided it deserved a post of its own.

There was no recipe to go with the photo –  I’ve never seen this one before – but after some research I found that this is actually a common breakfast dish in the US (also called bird’s nest or eggs in the basket).  I found a great-looking version of the recipe here.  Can’t wait to make this for brunch on Sunday!

Tostadas

This smaller and fried version of the traditional Venezuelan arepa is a favorite in my home town, Maracaibo, as well as a personal favorite. Over the holidays, I went back and forth between Christmas food and these.

Christmas feast

Holidays at home in Venezuela revolve mainly around food.  Family and friends gather around the table to share in the  hearty Christmas feast. Here are just a few of our Christmas-time staple dishes.

{Hallacas}

{Pan de Jamon: bread rolled with ham, raisins and olives}

{Ensalada Rusa: a Venezuelan variation of the typical russian potato salad}

{Ponche Crema: milk/condensed milk based (egg-less) drink with rum}
