Cake praise

Last weekend, my friend Monica invited us over for a BBQ.  A friend of her’s brought this amazing cake, which I still cannot get over. It is basically an oversized alfajor.  Layers of crumbly cornflour goodness filled with sweet dulce de leche (similar to the kind I used here).  This cake tasted and looked just like an extra large version of the cookies I wrote about here.

Unfortunately, I do not have the recipe for this cake yet, but I am determined to find it.  If anyone out there has a similar one, please, I beg you to share.

Berry good

If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know I like pairing my dulce de leche with green apples.

My newest addiction is pairing it with sliced strawberries. I create a few layers and eat them as strawberry caramel mini sandwiches.

Caramel apples

I had my first caramel apple in Chicago earlier this year (pictured above). I gave into it because it looked so yummy, but I found it hard to eat without getting all sticky. Also, the caramel itself wasn’t great. It was hard as taffy and separated from the apple as I ate it.

However, the idea of green apples with caramel lingered in my head and led me to experiment. Now I’ve become a little bit obsessed with my own version of this dessert.

I slice up a small green apple and arrange the slices around my favorite caramel, using it as a dip. My favorite is “La Pataia” Dulce de Leche.
